Day 2: The Monument to Self

Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 15:10-12

Cowboy Wisdom: "A real cowboy builds monuments to God's goodness, not shrines to his own glory. When you start carving your own name in the victory post, you've forgotten who gave you the strength to ride."

Picture this: Saul has just won a major military victory against the Amalekites. The battle is over, the enemy is defeated (mostly), and what does he do? He rides straight to Carmel and builds himself a monument. Not a memorial to God's faithfulness, not a tribute to the Lord's strength, not even a monument to honor the soldiers who fought bravely—a monument to himself.

This is like a ranch hand taking full credit for bringing in the cattle when it was the trail boss who knew every watering hole, every safe passage, and every shortcut that made the drive successful. It's like a cowboy boasting about his riding skills while forgetting that God gave him the balance, the horse gave him the platform, and the saddle maker gave him something to sit on.

Meanwhile, back in heaven, God is watching this whole sorry spectacle unfold. The Almighty, who had given Saul the victory, the army, the strategy, and the strength, sees His servant building a shrine to human achievement. Can you imagine the heartbreak? It's like watching your child succeed at something you taught them, helped them with, and cheered them through, only to have them pretend you had nothing to do with it.

The Bible says God regretted making Saul king. Let that sink in like morning dew on dry ground. The Creator of the universe, who knew the end from the beginning, was grieved by Saul's transformation from humble servant to self-absorbed monument builder.

Here's the truth about every victory in our lives: God provided the strength, the opportunity, the abilities, and the breath in our lungs to achieve it. When we succeed in business, it's because He gave us the mind to think and the chance to try. When we overcome temptation, it's because His Spirit gave us the power to resist. When we serve others effectively, it's because He equipped us and opened the doors.

Every monument should point skyward, not inward. Every success story should have God's fingerprints all over it, not just our signature at the bottom.

Questions for Reflection
  1. What "monuments to self" have you built in your life?
  2. How do you typically respond when God blesses you with success?
  3. What would it look like to build monuments to God instead of yourself?

Prayer Focus:
Father, forgive me for the times I've taken credit for Your work. Help me build monuments that point to Your goodness, not my achievements. May my life be a testament to Your grace, not my glory. Amen.
