Determined to Finish the Ride

SCRIPTURE

Acts 21:7–8 (NASB95)

When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais, and after greeting the brethren, we stayed with them for a day. On the next day we left and came to Caesarea, and entering the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him.

Proverbs 11:14 (NASB95)

Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.

COWBOY WISDOM

A determined cowboy is a sight to behold. Once he's made up his mind to get somewhere, neither weather, rough terrain, nor a lame horse is going to stop him. That kind of determination is one of the finest traits a man can carry — it's what builds ranches, raises good families, and gets the gospel to the ends of the earth. Paul had it in spades. He rode through Ptolemais, stopped only for a day, pressed on to Caesarea, and never wavered from his mission to get to Jerusalem. He wouldn't be sidetracked, and that is admirable. The Lord can use a determined man in mighty ways.

But determination has a shadow side. When our resolve is pointed in the wrong direction, or is outrunning the voice of God, it can take us places we were never meant to go. Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that where there is no guidance, people fall — and that victory is found in the abundance of counselors. Paul had already received one warning at Tyre through the Spirit, yet he pressed on. The very quality that made him an unstoppable missionary was now steering him past warning signs God had posted on the road. There's a thin line between Spirit-led boldness and flesh-driven stubbornness, and only humility and prayer can keep us on the right side of it.

The lesson isn't to become a man or woman without determination — God forbid. The lesson is to make sure your determination is hitched to the right wagon. Before you dig in your spurs and charge ahead, ask: Have I sought godly counsel? Have I prayed long enough to hear an answer, or just long enough to present my plan? When trusted, Spirit-filled people in your life are all saying 'wait,' that's not necessarily the devil trying to stop you. It may be the Good Shepherd stepping in front of your horse. Determination surrendered to God's will is unstoppable. Determination that ignores God's will is just stubbornness with a noble face.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

  1. What is the difference between God-given determination and fleshly stubbornness? How can you tell which one is driving you in a current situation?

  2. When was the last time you sought out multiple wise counselors before making a major decision? What was the result?

  3. Is there something you are pursuing right now that trusted, Spirit-filled people in your life have warned you about? How have you responded to those warnings?

PRAYER FOCUS

Father, I thank You for the gift of determination. I ask that You would harness it for Your purposes and Your glory alone. Give me the humility to listen when You speak through godly counselors, and the wisdom to know the difference between Your voice calling me forward and my own pride pushing me ahead. When I am wrong, help me to stop, dismount, and listen. Make my determination a tool in Your hands, not a wall between us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
