Clean Hands Before the Lord
Acts 20:26–28 (NASB95)
"Therefore, I testify to you this day
that I am innocent of the blood of all men.
For I did not shrink from declaring to you
the whole purpose of God.
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock,
among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,
to shepherd the church of God
which He purchased with His own blood."

At the end of a long cattle drive, the most important accounting isn't the tally of the herd — it's whether the foreman can look the rancher in the eye and say he did right by the animals entrusted to his care. Paul stood before the elders of Ephesus and made just such a declaration: he was innocent of the blood of all men. Not because he was perfect, but because he had not shrunk back from declaring the whole purpose of God to everyone the Lord placed before him. He left it all in the arena.
The warning from Ezekiel 3:18 carries the full weight of this truth: "When I say to the wicked, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand." That is a sobering word. The Lord holds us accountable not just for what we do wrong, but for the warning we fail to give. Christians today treat soul-winning as though it were optional, like a luxury rather than a calling.
Paul then turned to those elders and reminded them of their God-given role: overseers, shepherds of a flock that was purchased — not with silver or gold, but with the blood of Jesus Christ Himself. That flock is precious. A good shepherd doesn't clock out and leave the gate open. He stays alert, because the wolves — from outside and sometimes from within — are always watching for an unguarded moment.
Whatever role the Lord has given you — as a pastor, a lay leader, a parent, a friend — you are a shepherd over someone. The question isn't whether wolves will come; they will. The question is whether you'll be standing at your post when they do. And on that day when you stand before the Lord, will your hands be clean?

Is there someone in your life who needs to hear the gospel, and you've been putting it off? What's stopping you?
What does it mean to you personally that the church was purchased with Christ's own blood?
What "wolves" — false teaching, distraction, worldliness — do you need to be guarding against right now?
What would it look like to finish this season of life with "clean hands" before God?
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, give us clean hands. Make us bold enough to declare Your truth to those around us, and forgive us for the times we have stayed silent when we should have spoken. Help those You've placed as overseers and shepherds to guard the flock faithfully. And remind us daily that this church was purchased with a price beyond measure. We will not treat it lightly. Amen.
