Saddle Up Again - The Power of Perseverance
Getting Back on the Horse After Being Thrown
Scripture: Acts 14:1-3 (NASB95)
In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks.
But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren.
Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands.
Cowboy Wisdom
Any old cowboy worth his salt knows that getting thrown from a horse ain’t the end of the story—it’s just the beginning of the next chapter. The measure of a rider isn’t whether he hits the dirt; it’s whether he gets up, dusts off his britches, and climbs right back into the saddle. Paul and Barnabas had just been run clean out of Antioch by folks who wanted nothing to do with the gospel. They could’ve hung up their spurs and called it quits. But they didn’t. They rode straight into Iconium and walked right back into another synagogue, preaching the very same message that had gotten them into hot water in the first place.
Out on the ranch, you learn real quick that the fences don’t mend themselves, and the cattle don’t round up on their own. There’s work to be done every single day, whether it’s blazing hot or pouring rain. The same is true in the Christian life. There’s always going to be opposition—somebody stirring up trouble, somebody embittering folks against what’s right. But the cowboy doesn’t abandon the herd just because a coyote shows up. He stays the course and protects what’s been entrusted to him.
Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly, and God backed them up with signs and wonders. That’s the promise for every believer who refuses to quit: when you ride for the Lord’s brand, He rides with you. The trail may be rough, and the opposition may be fierce, but the Boss never leaves His hands stranded on the range. So whatever knocked you down yesterday—get up today, saddle up, and ride on. The work of the gospel doesn’t wait for fair weather.
Questions for Reflection
1. When was the last time opposition or discouragement tempted you to quit serving the Lord? How did you respond?
2. Paul and Barnabas went right back into the synagogue despite what had just happened. What area of ministry or obedience is God calling you to re-enter with fresh boldness?
3. How does knowing that God “testifies to the word of His grace” encourage you to keep going when the trail gets rough?
Prayer Focus
Lord, give me the grit and determination of Paul and Barnabas. When I get knocked down by opposition, criticism, or discouragement, help me to get back up and keep riding for Your Kingdom. I trust that You will testify to Your Word when I speak it boldly. Strengthen my resolve today, and don’t let me quit before the work is done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
