Cowboy Wisdom
Out here on the ranch, every critter carries a brand. You can turn a steer loose on a thousand acres, but that mark on the hide never lies about who it belongs to. Long before there was a fence line or a brand iron, God set His mark on the whole of creation. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Nothing you can see out your window this mornin’ — not the sunrise over the cedar, not the mockingbird workin’ the fence post — got here by accident. It all belongs to the One who made it, and His brand is burned deep.
And of everything God made, He saved His finest work for last. “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him” (Genesis 1:27). That means the fella next to you in the pew and the stranger fillin’ his truck at the gas station both carry the Maker’s likeness. When our founders wrote that folks are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,” they weren’t just penning pretty words — they were standing on the truth of Genesis. Rights that come from a Creator can’t be revoked by any king, congress, or committee, because the One who granted them outranks them all.
That’s why a Creator changes everything. If the world just spun itself up out of nothing, then there’s no fixed North Star to ride by — no self-evident truths, no right and no wrong, just whoever’s holdin’ the biggest stick. But because God made it, creation has a beginning, a purpose, and a moral order you can build a life on. “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1). The whole sky is preachin’ a sermon, if we’ll just look up and listen.
So before we ever get to talkin’ about liberty and rights, we’ve got to settle first things first. Every freedom we hold dear traces back up the line to the Creator who gave it. Recognize His brand on your own life this mornin’, and you’ll find you don’t belong to yourself — you belong to Him.
Questions for Reflection
When you look at the world around you — the land, the sky, the people — how often do you stop to remember that it all belongs to God?
If your rights and freedoms come from your Creator rather than from any government, how should that change the way you value them?
In what area of your life have you been living as though you belong to yourself instead of to the One who made you?
Prayer Focus
Father, You are the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and Your mark is on everything You have made — including me. Thank You that I bear Your image and that the freedoms I enjoy come down from Your hand and not from man’s. Help me to look up today and hear the sermon the skies are preaching, and to live like one who belongs to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
