Never Too Old to Ride

Scripture Focus: Acts 7:20-36 (Moses' witness)

Cowboy Wisdom: There's an old saying on the ranch: "Age is just a number until you try to get on a horse you haven't ridden in twenty years." Moses thought he was past his prime when God called him from a burning bush. He was eighty years old—long past retirement age even by cowboy standards.

Moses had already failed once trying to deliver his people his own way. He'd spent forty years herding sheep in the wilderness, probably thinking his best days were behind him. But God had been using that time to prepare him, breaking him like a wild horse gets gentled, making him ready for the greatest trail ride of his life. Those forty years in the desert weren't wasted—they were God's training ground. Moses learned patience, humility, and dependence on God while watching sheep on the backside of nowhere.

God doesn't look at your age, your past failures, or your résumé. He looks at your heart. Moses shows us that God can use us even when we don't think so. You're never too old, too inexperienced, too broken, or too far past your "expiration date" for God to use you for His glory. In fact, God seems to specialize in using people who feel unqualified. When we're weak, He's strong. When we're empty, He fills us. Moses went from stuttering shepherd to the mighty deliverer of Israel—all because he finally said yes to God's call.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What excuses have you made for why God can't use you?

  2. How has God been preparing you during seasons that felt like wilderness wandering?

  3. What "burning bush moment" might God be giving you right now that you've been ignoring?

Prayer Focus: Confess your doubts about God's ability to use you. Ask Him to open your eyes to the ways He's been preparing you. Pray for courage to answer His call, regardless of age or past failures.
