One Brand - No Distinction in God’s Sight
Today’s Scripture - Acts 15:8–9, 11
“And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.”
Cowboy Wisdom
On the open range, cattle from different ranches all graze under the same sky, drink from the same creeks, and shelter under the same cottonwood trees. Come roundup time, though, men start sorting — looking at brands, checking ear marks, deciding who belongs where. Some outfits treat another man’s cattle like strays that don’t belong on the grass. But here’s the thing: the rain doesn’t check brands before it falls, and the grass doesn’t ask whose herd you run with before it grows.
God’s kingdom works the same way. Peter stood up in that Jerusalem council like a trail boss setting the record straight. He’d seen God move among the Gentiles with his own two eyes — same Spirit, same power, same salvation. God didn’t check their papers first. He didn’t ask what synagogue they attended, what side of the tracks they grew up on, or whether their family name carried any weight. He looked at one thing: their hearts. And He made no distinction between them and the Jewish believers. None.
But history is full of folks who drew lines God never drew. There have always been those who wanted to decide who was “in” and who was “out” based on their own standards rather than the Almighty’s. When we create categories among God’s children — whether by race, class, denomination, or tradition — we’re placing a yoke on people that neither we nor our fathers could bear. Peter said it plain: we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.
It doesn’t matter what ranch you came from, partner. What matters is whose brand you carry. And if the King of Kings has put His mark on your heart, there isn’t a soul on this green earth who has the right to say you don’t belong.
“It doesn’t matter what ranch you came from. What matters is whose brand you carry.”
Questions for Reflection
Are there people or groups you’ve unconsciously considered “less than” in the family of God? What would it look like to see them the way God sees them?
Peter said God “made no distinction.” Where do you see the church today still making distinctions that God doesn’t make?
How does the truth that God looks at the heart — not the outward appearance — challenge or comfort you personally?
Prayer Focus
God, forgive me for the times I’ve drawn lines You never drew. Open my eyes to see every person the way You see them — as someone for whom Christ died. Help me to celebrate the unity of Your Spirit rather than insisting on divisions of my own making. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
