Burning the Saddle Bags

"Repentance Means Leaving Something Behind in the Ashes"

Today's Scripture

Acts 19:17-20 (NASB95) "This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified. Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing."

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB95) "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."

Romans 6:1-2 (NASB95) "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?"

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NASB95) "That, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth."

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NASB95) "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith."

Cowboy Wisdom

When a cowboy truly decides to change his ways, there comes a moment where he has to deal with the gear from his old life. The believers in Ephesus understood this instinctively — when the grace of God hit them, they didn't quietly tuck their books of magic away in a drawer for safekeeping. They built a bonfire in a public place and threw fifty thousand pieces of silver worth of the old life into the flames. Paul had written about exactly this kind of transformation: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). That's repentance with boots on.

They could have sold those books. But the true believer understands that money isn't everything. Those books represented a former allegiance — a former way of navigating life without God. Keeping them would have been like continuing in sin so that grace might increase. Paul's answer to that way of thinking was firm: "May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?" (Romans 6:1-2). Real conversion burns the bridge behind it. As Paul urged the Ephesians themselves: "Lay aside the old self...and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth" (Ephesians 4:22-24).

What makes this scene so powerful is that it was public. They didn't just change quietly in their hearts — they made a declaration that everyone in Ephesus could see and smell. There's something important about that kind of testimony. Transformed lives are the most compelling sermon ever preached, and the word of God grew mightily in Ephesus because people saw the change.

As you close out this devotional, ask yourself what still sits in the saddlebag. Hebrews says it plainly: "Let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:1-2). God's grace is wide enough to cover it all. His call is clear: leave it behind and ride toward the light.

Questions for Reflection

  1. What from your old life have you been reluctant to fully lay down before God — and why?

  2. Is there something you've been holding onto that, if surrendered publicly, would serve as a powerful testimony to those around you?

  3. How has genuine repentance — not just private, but demonstrated through changed living — shaped who you are today?

  4. What is one thing you need to throw on the fire this week so the word of God can grow mightily in your life?

Prayer Focus

Lord, give me the courage of those Ephesian believers who threw their old lives on a public fire and never looked back. Show me what belongs in the flames — what I've been protecting that has no place in a life given to You. I want the word of God to grow mightily in my life, not just in my beliefs but in my choices, my habits, and the trail I leave behind. For Your glory alone. Amen.
