The Lord Stands With You
SCRIPTURE
Acts 23:11
But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, “Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also.”
COWBOY WISDOM
There’s nothing lonelier than facing trouble with nobody beside you. Paul had just survived a riot of a trial — beaten, accused, nearly torn apart by a divided mob — and that night, in whatever dark little room they had him locked up in, the Lord came and stood right there with him.
Notice it doesn’t say an angel passed along a message or that Paul simply felt encouraged. It says “the Lord stood at his side.” Like a good neighbor showing up the night your barn burns, not with a long speech, just with his presence — letting you know you’re not facing it by yourself. That’s the kind of God we serve. He promised it plain in Hebrews 13:5: “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.” People will let you down. They’ll forget to call, forget to show up, get busy with their own troubles. The Lord never does.
And then He spoke: “Take courage… you must witness at Rome also.” Not just comfort, but commission. The Lord didn’t just steady Paul’s nerves — He gave him a reason to keep going. There’d be more roads ahead, more hard places, but Paul wouldn’t be walking into them blind or alone. He’d already heard from the One who’d be there waiting on the other side of every one of them.
Every one of us has nights like that — dark, uncertain, maybe even unjust. The promise isn’t that the trouble disappears. The promise is that the Lord stands at your side right in the middle of it, the same way He stood with Paul, and He’ll speak the courage into you that you can’t muster up on your own.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
Can you recall a time when you felt completely alone in a hard season, and then sensed God’s presence in an unmistakable way?
Hebrews 13:5 promises God will never forsake us. How does remembering that promise change the way you face uncertainty?
Paul received both comfort and a mission in that moment. Has God ever used a hard season to point you toward what He wanted you to do next?
Who in your life is going through a dark night right now where they need to be reminded that the Lord — and His people — stand with them?
PRAYER FOCUS
Lord, on the nights when I feel like Paul — worn out, accused, uncertain what’s coming next — remind me that You stand right at my side. You have never deserted me and You never will. Give me the courage Paul received that night, not just to get through the hard place, but to keep moving forward in whatever You’ve called me to do next. Thank You for never leaving me to face it alone. In Jesus' name, amen.
