Opposition is Guaranteed

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (NASB95)

"Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified."

Cowboy Wisdom

Any cowboy who's broken horses knows that the first one might fight you, but that doesn't mean the rest will be easy. In fact, every horse has its own way of testing whether you mean business. Paul understood this – he compared the Christian life to a boxing match where you face one challenger after another. Satan doesn't take a day off just because you won yesterday's battle. As long as we're spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, we're going to be in a fight.

The interesting thing about Paul's metaphor is that a boxer has to fight his way to the top, and then keep fighting to stay there. You don't get to retire from the ring until the final bell sounds. Some folks think that once they overcome one big obstacle or temptation, the hard part is over. But Paul knew better. Wherever he went, he was in constant conflict with the enemy. The question isn't whether opposition will come – it's whether you'll be ready when it does.

Here's the truth: if you're not facing any opposition, you might want to check if you're actually advancing the kingdom. A cowboy sitting in the bunkhouse doesn't have to worry about getting thrown from a horse. But if you're out there riding the range, sharing the gospel, and standing up for Jesus Christ, you can count on the devil trying to knock you off. That's not a sign you're doing something wrong – it's a sign you're doing something right.

Questions for Reflection

  1. What forms of opposition have you faced in your Christian walk, and how have you responded?

  2. Are you spiritually prepared for ongoing battles, or do you expect the Christian life to get easier over time?

  3. In what areas of your spiritual life do you need to "discipline your body and make it your slave"?

Prayer Focus

Pray for endurance and perseverance in the face of spiritual opposition. Ask God to strengthen you for the ongoing battles ahead. Pray for wisdom to recognize the enemy's tactics and courage to stand firm in faith.
