Called and Sent by God

Scripture: Acts 13:2-3 (NASB95) "

While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away."

Cowboy Wisdom

Out on the ranch, there's a big difference between a hired hand and someone who's been personally chosen by the owner for a special task. When the boss calls you by name and gives you a mission, you know it's important work that he trusts only certain folks to handle. That's exactly what happened with Barnabas and Saul – they weren't self-appointed volunteers or just picked by a committee. The Holy Spirit Himself called them out by name while they were serving the Lord.

Too many Christians today are waiting for some spectacular sign or dramatic moment to know God's calling on their lives. But notice that Barnabas and Saul were already "ministering to the Lord" when the Holy Spirit spoke. They were faithful in worship, prayer, and fasting. They were already in the saddle, so to speak, when God gave them their marching orders. God doesn't usually call idle folks – He calls those who are already about His business.

When God appoints you for a task, you can ride with confidence knowing you're accountable to Him, not to the opinions of others. You're sent by the highest authority, backed by divine power, and you don't have to apologize for following His orders. That kind of calling gives a cowboy – or any Christian – the courage to face whatever opposition comes down the trail.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Are you faithfully serving the Lord where you are right now, or are you waiting for a "calling" before you get started?

  2. How does knowing you're accountable to God rather than to people change the way you approach ministry and sharing the gospel?

  3. What might God be calling you to do that you've been avoiding or putting off?

Prayer Focus

Ask God to help you be faithful in serving Him right where you are. Pray for sensitivity to hear the Holy Spirit's voice when He calls you to specific tasks. Ask for courage to follow God's calling regardless of what others might think or say.
