Cowboy Wisdom

Benjamin Franklin said the Constitution doesn’t guarantee happiness — only the pursuit of it. You’ve got to catch up with it yourself. And a whole lot of folks spend their whole lives ridin’ hard after happiness the way a green cowhand chases a spooked colt across an open pasture — arms flailin’, hat flyin’, never quite gettin’ a rope on it. They chase it through money, through pleasure, through the next new thing, and it always seems to stay just past the reach of their fingertips.

The trouble is they’re lookin’ in the wrong pasture. Real joy was never meant to be run down out in the open country — it’s found up close, in the presence of God Himself. “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11). You don’t chase that kind of joy. You come near to the One who gives it.

And notice the good Lord flips the whole thing around on us. “Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Stop chasin’ the desires and start delightin’ in the Lord, and you’ll find He tends to the desires Himself. He’s not stingy with joy, either — Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full” (John 15:11). That’s a full measure, packed down and running over.

So rest easy on this one. God isn’t plottin’ your misery. “I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). The pursuit of happiness ends the day you quit chasin’ the colt and turn back toward the barn where the Master is standin’ with the gate open. Fullness of joy was never out yonder. It was always right there in His presence.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Where have you been chasing happiness — and has that chase actually satisfied you?

  2. What’s the difference between pursuing your own desires and delighting yourself in the Lord?

  3. How does knowing God’s plans for you are “for welfare and not for calamity” change the way you face an uncertain future?

Prayer Focus

Lord, I confess I’ve worn myself out chasing a happiness that always stays just out of reach. Teach me to stop running and to come near to You, for in Your presence is fullness of joy. Help me delight myself in You and trust You with the desires of my heart. Thank You that Your plans for me are good — a future and a hope. Fill me with Your joy today, that it may be made full. In Jesus’ name, amen.
