Cowboy Wisdom

Liberty has never once come cheap. When those fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence, they were as good as signing their own death warrant — to England, that document was a declaration of war. Some were captured and tortured, some watched their homes burned to the ground, some lost their sons, and some died penniless in rags. Freedom cost them everything, because that’s the going price of freedom. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

But there’s a deeper liberty still, one no army ever won on a battlefield. Jesus came to break a chain heavier than any England ever forged — the chain of sin. “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10b). The freedom our founders bled for is a precious thing, but the freedom Christ purchased on the cross is the one that sets a soul loose for good. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17).

Now here’s the warning a good hand knows by heart: a critter that’s been turned loose from the pen will sometimes wander right back into the trap it came from. Paul saw it in folks too. “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). Christ didn’t knock your shackles off just so you could slip ’em back on — back into the old habits, the old bitterness, the old bondage. Freedom bought at that kind of price is meant to be lived in, not squandered.

So value your liberty on both accounts this week. Thank God for the men who paid in blood for the flag that flies over your town. But thank Him even more for the Son who paid in blood for the chains around your heart. And once you’re free — stand firm. Don’t go crawlin’ back to the pen.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Freedom always comes at a cost. What has your freedom — political and spiritual — cost the ones who came before you?

  2. Christ set you free from sin. Is there an old “yoke of slavery” you’ve been tempted to slip back into?

  3. What would it look like this week to “stand firm” in the liberty Jesus purchased for you?

  4. How does the abundant life Jesus offers differ from the freedom the world chases after?

Prayer Focus

Father, thank You for the costly gift of freedom — both the liberty won for my country and the far greater liberty won for my soul at the cross. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, and Your Spirit has set me free indeed. Keep me standing firm, Lord. Don’t let me wander back into the yoke Christ broke off of me. Help me live the abundant life He came to give. In Jesus’ name, amen.
