Rattlesnakes on the Trail
Scripture: Acts 13:9-11 (NASB95)
"But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, and said, 'You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord? Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.' And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand."
Cowboy Wisdom
Any experienced trail hand knows that when you're driving cattle through good grazing land, you're going to encounter rattlesnakes. It's just part of the territory. The devil doesn't waste his time on empty desert—he shows up where God's doing something important, right where the grass is green and the water's flowing. You can count on it.
When Sergius Paulus wanted to hear the gospel, that sorcerer Elymas slithered up like a sidewinder, doing everything he could to keep the man from hearing truth. That's how Satan works. For every person God has appointed for a task, the devil's got somebody ready to oppose it. For every soul seeking truth, there's a false prophet trying to lead them astray. The enemy knows that if he can't stop the gospel from being preached, he can at least try to stop people from hearing it.
But here's what every cowboy needs to remember: God's power is greater than any rattlesnake the devil can send. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, called out that fraud for exactly what he was—full of deceit, a son of the devil, an enemy of righteousness. And God struck him blind right there. Sometimes the Lord has to show His power in unmistakable ways so people can see the difference between the genuine article and the counterfeit. Don't be afraid of the opposition—our God is bigger than their best shot.
