A Declaration of Dependence
Scripture
Mark 10:43–45 But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.
Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
Psalm 33:12a Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.
Cowboy Wisdom
All week we’ve traced how our founding rests on God — Creator, equality, liberty, and joy all comin’ down from His hand. But here’s the sober truth we can’t skip past: whatever rights the government grants, the government can take away. We’ve watched it happen. That’s why our most fundamental rights were never meant to rest on shifting sand, but on the firmest ground there is — the Word of God. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Nations rise and fall on that one principle.
Even the folks in charge answer to a higher Boss. Jesus turned worldly power clean upside down: “Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant… for even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43–45). Real greatness, in God’s outfit, wears work gloves. The leader who forgets he answers to God and serves the people has forgotten the whole job description.
Now think back on that picture of George Washington out in the snow at Valley Forge. His little army was starvin’ and freezin’, everything they held dear hangin’ in the balance against impossible odds. And there he was, down on his knees, prayin’. That’s the spirit that built this country — not proud independence, but humble dependence on Almighty God. We’ve grown mighty independent since then, and somewhere along the trail we forgot to stay dependent on the Lord.
So here’s the call, plain as a bell at suppertime. It’s time for a Declaration of Dependence. Live a good Christian example and share the gospel every chance you get. Pray for a national revival to spread across this land. And lean the whole weight of your life on God as your true source of liberty, courage, and spiritual power. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12a). Today, don’t declare your independence — declare your dependence on Him.

What would it look like for you personally to sign a “Declaration of Dependence” on God today?

Prayer Focus
Almighty God, I confess that I’ve too often lived independent of You when I was made to lean on You for everything. Today I declare my dependence — on You for liberty, for courage, and for spiritual power. Make me a good example, give me a burden to share the gospel, and send revival across this land. Let it be said of us that we are a people whose God is the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
