Committed to the Cost

Scripture Reading: Acts 7:54-59

Cowboy Wisdom:

"A true cowboy doesn't abandon the herd when wolves circle. He stands his ground, knowing the rancher has his back. How much more will our Heavenly Father stand with us?"

Stephen was so committed to Jesus Christ that he was willing to sacrifice everything—including his life. When that lynch mob of religious leaders stood snarling like wild dogs, gnashing their teeth at him, their intimidation couldn't break his commitment.

Like a ranch hand who stays with the herd through the blizzard, Stephen's purpose wasn't to escape condemnation or avoid suffering. He wasn't hoping to die, but he wasn't willing to deny the truth in order to live. He knew that being a witness for Jesus was more important than his comfort, more important than his safety, and more important than anything else in the world.

God gives special grace to those in their dying moments. From Jan Hus singing praises while being burned at the stake to countless Christians today who face persecution, the faithful witness of martyrs echoes Stephen's example. The word "martyr" itself means "witness"—and by their lives and deaths, they bear witness to Jesus Christ.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What am I holding onto that might be more important to me than my witness for Christ?

  2. Am I willing to face discomfort, criticism, or loss for the sake of the gospel?

  3. How does knowing that God gives special grace in difficult moments encourage me today?

Prayer Focus:

Pray for Christians around the world who face persecution and martyrdom. Ask God to strengthen your own commitment to Christ, whatever the cost may be.
